School
The School employs two certified deaf education teachers, a speech language pathologist that works in the classroom with the teachers and a teaching assistant who is a deaf adult. In addition to the classroom staff, educational interpreters are employed to assist our mainstreamed deaf students.
Upon entry into the program students are given tests, which help determine individual functioning levels, and classes are tailored according to individual needs. As a student progress through the program they may be mainstreamed into classes at the School or Laramie Jr. or Senior High School with an educational interpreter.
Assistive technology is in place in the deaf education classroom including: lights activated by alarm systems, computer and Internet accessibility, smart boards used for interactive instruction, and FM systems. Students who utilize hearing aides have them checked daily for proper functioning, cleanliness, and battery levels.
On-going sign language classes are offered to all staff and students to ensure that all persons who have contact with the deaf students are at least familiar with sign language and can communicate with them. The staff working directly with deaf students can converse in both ASL and Signed English and tailor their communications to individual student needs and background.
