Work Program
Each resident of Cathedral Home has the opportunity to participate in work program, voluntarily and as a required part of treatment objectives. Each cottage has developed and assigned monetary values to daily cottage responsibilities that contribute to cleanliness and up keep. Upon entering Cathedral Home, residents are provided with a checking and savings account to help save and budget the money earned from work program. Money that accrues in resident’s checking and savings accounts is often used to purchase personal items and send gifts home to family. As well, residents often come to treatment with debts and fines and can utilize this resource as a way to meet court and legal requirements.
Work program serves several important teaching functions regarding social responsibility. It allows residents to experience both a sense of contribution to cottage life and accomplishment which upholds the key components of Cathedral Home’s mission, in particular, the aspects of mastery and responsibility. These are key ingredients in the development of self-respect, which is part of the foundation for good mental health and happiness. Moreover, contributing to the cottage and campus fulfills the needs to belong and become autonomous.
As residents progress, they often transition into working roles throughout campus. These positions allow for increased responsibility and improvement of independent living skills and future employment proficiency. Cathedral Home offers vocational opportunities in the following areas:
- Administration Office
- Mae Olson Education Center
- Hay Health Care Center
- The Chapel
- Coffee House Corner
- The Horse Program
- The Pedal Away Program
- Campus Landscaping
While participating in these jobs, each resident works with a supervisor and job coach to follow up and improve skills; including, professionalism and accountability, independence, reliability, and respect. A campus job coach works with residents on these skills and works with the cottage team members to prepare residents for future employment in the Laramie community and within the communities they will return to upon graduation. Overall, Cathedral Home’s work program is an incentive and motivational based program that continues to help residents build confidence and increase success; both in the treatment process and in the future.
